Physiotherapy for Urinary Incontinence in Edmonton
Urinary incontinence is any unwanted leaking of urine, whether a few drops with a cough or a sudden urge you cannot hold. It is common but treatable. At Next Step Physio & Neurorehab Clinic in Edmonton, pelvic floor physiotherapy assesses how your bladder, pelvic floor muscles and daily habits work together and builds a plan that may help reduce leaking.
We see adults of all genders, including people after prostate surgery, after childbirth, during menopause and later in life. No referral is needed, appointments are in a private room, and visits are direct-billed to many extended health plans at our Millwoods clinic.
Types of incontinence we commonly see
Stress incontinence is leaking when pressure rises in the abdomen: coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting or running. It often relates to pelvic floor muscles that are weak, poorly coordinated or not responding quickly enough.
Urge incontinence is a sudden, strong need to go, sometimes with leaking before you reach the toilet, and often with going very frequently. It relates more to how the bladder and nervous system communicate and to habits that can be retrained.
Mixed incontinence is a combination of both. Many people also leak after urinating (post-void dribble) or during intimacy. Each pattern is approached differently, which is why a careful assessment matters more than a generic exercise handout.
How physiotherapy approaches leaking
Pelvic floor physiotherapy is recommended in clinical guidelines as a first-line, conservative approach for stress and urge incontinence. Treatment commonly includes learning to find and correctly contract and relax the pelvic floor, building strength and endurance, timing a contraction before a cough or lift, bladder retraining and urge-suppression strategies, adjusting fluid and caffeine habits, and addressing constipation, breathing and posture that add pressure to the bladder.
Some people need to strengthen; others have muscles that are overactive and need to learn to let go. For men after prostate surgery, early guided pelvic floor training is commonly used to support the return of control. Our pelvic floor physiotherapist, Mercy, provides this care at Next Step.

When to see your doctor
Physiotherapy is suitable for most people with leaking, but some symptoms need medical review first. Please see your doctor if you have blood in your urine, pain or burning when urinating, a fever, sudden new incontinence, numbness in the saddle area, or difficulty emptying your bladder. These may signal infection or another condition that needs treatment. Once cleared, physiotherapy can usually begin.
If you are already under the care of a urologist, gynaecologist or continence nurse, we are happy to coordinate with them.
