Deep Tissue Massage in Edmonton for Chronic Tension and Muscle Pain
Deep tissue massage is a form of massage therapy that works on the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue using slow, firm pressure. At Next Step Physio & Neurorehab Clinic in Edmonton, it is provided by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) and is often used for long-standing tightness in the back, neck, shoulders and hips, for muscle recovery after injury or training, and alongside physiotherapy when hands-on release helps exercise work better.
Sessions are direct-billed to most extended health plans that cover massage therapy, and no referral is needed. We are located in Millwoods and can coordinate massage with your physiotherapy plan if you are already a patient.
What is deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage uses sustained pressure and slow strokes applied along the direction of muscle fibres to reach the deeper muscle layers and the fascia that surrounds them. Rather than a relaxation massage that glides over the surface, the therapist works specifically on areas of tension, adhesions and restricted movement.
It is not about pressure for its own sake. A skilled RMT adjusts depth to your tolerance and the tissue’s response — the goal is release and improved movement, not bracing against discomfort. Many people find it firm but comfortable, and any soreness afterwards is usually mild and short-lived.
How it differs from relaxation or Swedish massage
Relaxation (Swedish) massage uses lighter, flowing strokes to calm the nervous system and ease general tension. Deep tissue massage is more focused: slower, deeper, and directed at specific muscles that are tight, overworked or restricting movement.
If you are unsure which is right for you, tell us what you are hoping to get from the session — recovery from a specific problem, general stress relief, or both — and your therapist will recommend an approach. Many sessions combine both styles.

Is deep tissue massage safe?
For most people, yes. Your RMT will screen for conditions where deeper pressure needs to be adapted or avoided, such as recent surgery, blood-clotting disorders or anticoagulant use, osteoporosis, acute inflammation, skin infections and certain stages of pregnancy. Always tell your therapist about medications and health changes. Mild soreness for a day or two after a session is normal; sharp pain, bruising or worsening symptoms are not, and you should let us know.
