How Much Does Physiotherapy Cost in Edmonton?

Physiotherapy in Edmonton is usually paid per visit, with an initial assessment costing more than a follow-up because it is longer. Fees vary by clinic, service and appointment length. Many people pay little out of pocket because extended health plans, WCB-Alberta and motor vehicle accident benefits may cover treatment. Next Step Physio & Neurorehab Clinic direct-bills many major insurers.

This page explains what affects the price, how coverage typically works in Alberta, and what to ask before your first visit. Our current fees are: physiotherapy assessment $135 and follow-up $95; neurological physiotherapy assessment $150 and follow-up $120; vestibular assessment $150 and follow-up $125. Fees depend on the service and the length of your appointment.

What affects the cost of a physiotherapy visit

Several things shape the fee you see:

  • Initial assessment versus follow-up: the first visit includes a detailed history, examination and treatment plan, so it is longer and costs more than later visits.
  • Appointment length: longer treatment sessions are priced higher than shorter ones.
  • Type of service: physiotherapy, pelvic floor physiotherapy, acupuncture, massage therapy and shockwave therapy are billed under different service categories and may have different fees.
  • Additional treatments: some add-ons, such as dry needling or shockwave, may be included in a session or billed separately depending on the clinic.
  • Setting: in-home physiotherapy typically costs more than in-clinic care because of travel time.

At Next Step, fees vary by service and appointment length. Reception can tell you the current fee for the appointment you are booking.

Does Alberta Health Care cover physiotherapy?

In general, physiotherapy at a private community clinic is not covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan. Publicly funded physiotherapy is mainly available through hospitals and specific programs, for example after certain surgeries or hospital stays, and access depends on eligibility and wait times. Because eligibility rules change, we recommend confirming with your doctor or Alberta Health Services if you think you may qualify.

Most people attending a community clinic pay through one or more of the following:

  • Extended health benefits through an employer, union, school or individual plan, which usually cover a set dollar amount or number of visits per year
  • WCB-Alberta, for injuries that happened at work and have an accepted claim
  • Motor vehicle accident benefits under Alberta’s Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols and Section B accident benefits
  • Health spending accounts
  • Paying directly and keeping receipts for tax purposes or later reimbursement

Extended health, WCB and MVA: what to know

Extended health plans differ widely. Some pay a percentage of each visit, some pay a fixed amount per visit, and most have an annual maximum. A few require a doctor’s referral before they will reimburse physiotherapy, even though the clinic itself does not need one. Check your plan booklet or call your insurer, and bring your policy and member numbers to your first visit.

If you were hurt at work, report the injury to your employer and WCB-Alberta. Once a claim is accepted, treatment is billed to WCB and you do not usually pay for approved visits.

If you were injured in a car accident in Alberta, you have access to treatment under the Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols for sprains, strains and whiplash-related injuries, and to Section B accident benefits through your own auto insurer. We can help you understand the paperwork and bill the insurer directly where possible. No dollar figures are given here because coverage depends on your policy and claim.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQ

Fees and payment

Why is the first visit more expensive?

The initial assessment is longer. It includes your history, a physical examination, your diagnosis in plain language, your first treatment and a written plan.

Do you publish your fees?

Fees vary by service and appointment length. Call the clinic and reception will give you the current fee for the appointment you need.

Can I pay per visit, or do I need a package?

You pay per visit. There is no obligation to buy a set number of sessions.

What payment methods do you accept?

Ask reception when you book; common options include debit, credit card and direct billing to your insurer.

Is a receipt provided?

Yes. You receive a receipt for every visit, which you can use for insurance reimbursement or tax purposes.

How much does physiotherapy cost in Edmonton?

At Next Step in Mill Woods, an initial physiotherapy assessment is $135 and a follow-up visit is $95. A neurological physiotherapy assessment is $150 with follow-ups at $120, and a vestibular (dizziness) assessment is $150 with follow-ups at $125. Fees across Edmonton clinics vary with the service and appointment length, and most extended health plans cover part or all of the cost.

How much does an hour of physiotherapy cost?

Physiotherapy is priced per visit rather than per hour. The first visit is longer because it includes the assessment and a treatment plan, which is why it costs more ($135 at Next Step) than a follow-up ($95). Neurological assessments are booked for about 60 minutes at $150.

Is there free physiotherapy in Alberta?

Not at private clinics. Alberta Health Services funds a limited number of visits in four situations: within 12 weeks of a fracture or orthopedic surgery, after a hip or knee replacement, and for low-income Albertans with a joint or muscle injury. Those visits are delivered at AHS sites and AHS-contracted clinics; see our page on Alberta Health coverage for how to access them.

Coverage

Is physiotherapy covered by Alberta Health Care?

Generally not at private community clinics. Some hospital-based and program-specific physiotherapy is publicly funded; confirm eligibility with your doctor or Alberta Health Services.

What does extended health typically cover?

Most plans cover physiotherapy up to an annual maximum, either as a percentage or a fixed amount per visit. Check your plan for details and any referral requirement.

Does WCB pay for my physiotherapy?

If your work injury claim is accepted, WCB-Alberta covers approved treatment and we bill them directly.

Who pays after a car accident?

In Alberta, treatment for many accident injuries is covered under the Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols and Section B benefits through your auto insurer. We can help with the process.

What happens if my coverage runs out?

We will tell you before it does. You can continue paying directly, adjust visit frequency, or focus on a home programme.
